It Only Takes a Minute- The HIV Testing Experience

Have you ever wondered what an HIV test consisted of? In this article, we are going to walk you through the HIV testing experience at Matthew 25 AIDS Clinic. And yes- it really does only take a minute!

You have the option of doing confidential or anonymous testing. Based on this, we will conduct paper work and ask some basic demographic and risk factor questions. Once that is finished we will begin to prep you for the test.

At Matthew 25, we use the INSTI Rapid Test which is done by collecting a small sample of blood through a finger-prick, similar to having your blood sugar checked, producing results within 60 seconds. We will take an alcohol wipe and clean the area of the finger that will be pricked. We then collect a small sample of blood from this finger-prick and begin the test. While waiting for the results, we will clean the area and apply a band-aid, if needed.

We know that getting an HIV test can be a difficult and a hard step to take for some people, and we want to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your experience. We will then ask if you are ready for your results. Once you are ready, we will show and explain to you whether your test produced reactive or non-reactive results.

If a non-reactive (or negative) test is produced, then we will go through some post-counseling with you to discuss any possible risk factors as well as ways you can prevent HIV.

If a reactive (or positive) test is produced, we will then conduct a confirmatory test to ensure these results are correct. This test takes 15 minutes to produce results.

No matter what the results are of your test, we can provide you with information and resources you need. Whether that be methods of prevention such as condoms, PrEP or linkage to care, Matthew 25 can help you every step of the way.

We urge everyone to start this new year off by getting tested and knowing your status! We now offer Drive-Up testing at our Henderson, Owensboro, and Bowling Green locations for a safe and socially distanced option. Call today to schedule your test- it only takes a minute!
